On Wednesday, July 25th 1956, At 11:10pm the Italian ocean liner Andrea Doria collided with MV Stockholm, near Nantucket, Massachusetts and eventually sank. We found an original watercolor of the Andrea Doria in an auction of nautical and marine art. Here’s what the winner wrote to us.
So thrilled to have won this original art of ANDREA DORIA. Our family was to have been on the fated voyage, but she was booked to capacity...the agent told my father, spend the extra days in Nice, enjoy the beach, and sail home on the next ship (CRISTOFORO COLOMBO). The newspaper stories and photos of the listing vessel were all over the hotel news stand while we were still in Nice. Have been fascinated by the DORIA ever since. I often wonder if our itinerary had been different and we had been returning from Spain instead of the S. of France if we would have been the unlucky inhabitants of the cabins where the Cianfarra family died in the impact.
